So, it’s the New Year, and you’ve got a couple goals you want to accomplish, to make this a great year for you!
Even if it’s only one or two things (which is what we’d recommend to start with…and make them super easy, so that you could almost do them in your sleep)…
How do you make it happen?
It’s all about scheduling. Turns out, and the research supports this, that WHAT GETS SCHEDULED GETS DONE!
Let me repeat that, it’s so important: What gets SCHEDULED, gets DONE.
Unfortunately, many of us have bought into the idea that scheduling is restrictive. That it somehow inhibits our natural creativity, and to truly be ourselves and express our inner genius, we need to be free to do what we want, when we want.
Sounds good, but it’s total baloney!
Quite the opposite is true. Having a life where the important stuff is scheduled in advance, the stuff that truly adds value to your life, frees you up to do the other fun things, without guilt, knowing that the important things are already handled.
The big rocks are the important stuff, the things that truly make your life better. What are those things? Eating good, healthy foods, walking, exercising, looking after your spine and nervous system, time socializing with friends and family, time to relax, reading, playing, etc. Things that add great value to your life!
Little rocks are the trivial things in life, the things that devour your time if you let them, crowding out the important things. Facebook, email, surfing the web, TV, etc.
For many people, all the busyness of life, the little rocks, crowd out those truly important things, so that you don’t have the time for them.
Have you ever said or heard “I don’t have time to exercise”, “I don’t have time to cook healthy meals”, or something like that? We’ve all said it, and have heard it countless times.
I want you to think of your time as a glass jar. You have small rocks and big rocks. The big rocks are the important, life giving things. The little rocks are the trivial, time wasters. If you try to put in all the small trivial rocks first, guess what happens when you go to put in the big, important, life-giving rocks. There’s no space! This is how 95% of people live their lives.
What’s the other way?
You put the BIG rocks in FIRST. Meaning you schedule the important things in your life so that you have time for them. The extra time you can fill in with the little rocks afterwards.
This is the ONLY way you’re able to consistently do the big, important stuff, the things which makes life worth living…by SCHEDULING it!
And the nice thing is, as you start to introduce new, positive habits in your life, the Big Rocks, you’ll start to FEEL better. You’ll see the fruit of your habits, and suddenly you’ll find yourself magically, automatically starting to do other healthy habits, almost on their own! It’s called momentum, and it’s a wonderful thing when it’s headed somewhere good.
So, if you haven’t already, I encourage you to pick 1 or 2 things that you’d like to make into habits. Make them easy simple first steps, and figure out WHEN you’ll do them. Schedule it out. Give yourself the best chance for success. Then start!
As a hint, when do you think the best time of day normally is?
The morning, before the world and the million distractions have come in to get you off track. Most of my habits are done first thing in the morning, because that’s my time, before my wife and kids are up, and I can control it almost 100%.
That may not be for you, whatever time of day works for you is great, but stick with it!
If you’d care to share your 1 or 2 new habits, we’d love to hear them!
Here’s to continuing to make 2018 your best year yet!
